The Grand Opening of Kei Yau Integrated Medical Centre to Provide Integrated Primary Care Services in Chinese and Western Medicine
In response to the healthcare needs of an ageing population, the Hong Kong Government has been actively promoting the development of primary healthcare services under the concepts of "tertiary prevention", "district-based health system" and "medical-social collaboration". In line with the Government's policy on primary healthcare in the community, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong (the Association) has set up its first non-profit clinic, the Kei Yau Integrated Medical Centre, to provide quality primary healthcare services to the community with the concept of integrated Chinese and Western treatment through patient record sharing system.
The Centre officially commenced operation on 6 May 2023 with the presence of Dr Pang Fei-chau, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare of the Hospital Authority; Professor Vivian Wong Tamm, Chairman of the Chinese and Western Medicine and Health Care Professions Services Development Advisory Group of the Association; Dr Arnold Cheng, President of the Association; The Rt Rev Dr Thomas Soo, Director of the Association; and Mr. Karl Lau, General Secretary of the Association as officiating guests. Members of the Chinese and Western Medicine and Health Care Professions Services Development Advisory Group, led by Professor Vivian Wong Tamm, and other partners and associates were invited to witness the important milestone in the development of YMCA's integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and Health Care Professions services, along with a first-hand tour of the services.
Located on the ground floor of Lai Kee Mansion, 523 Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei, the Kei Yau Integrated Medical Centre serves as the YM Medical and Therapeutic Hub with service points on the first to third floors. The Kei Yau Integrated Medical Centre on the ground floor provides Chinese and Western general outpatient services, medical check-ups, vaccinations and specialist referral services. With the patient's consent, Chinese and Western medical practitioners will share their medical records and develop specific treatment plans for the patient, taking advantage of their respective knowhow. The seven Integrated Western and Chinese Medicine programmes include emotional distress, obesity and metabolic syndrome, women’s health, infectious disease, skin disorders and pain management.
The multi-disciplinary team consists of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and sports therapists, focusing on the three pillars of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. The Interdisciplinary approach includes DM & metabolic syndrome rehabilitation, Guolin Qigong Cancer Rehab, Taichi fall prevention, treatment for trauma & sports injury, femoral surgery rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, stroke rehabilitation and women health to prevent osteoporosis & sarcopenia.

YMCA Christian Academy Mural Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
YMCA Christian Academy (YCA) commissioned mural artist Mr Martin Megino to create a mural outside the school premises at 70 Bridges Street. After three weeks of work, the colourful and meaningful mural was completed on 5 May. A simple yet elegant ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in front of the mural by Mr Anthony Ng, Director of Education; Mr Geoff Blaik, Principal; and Mr Martin Megino, who delivered a heartfelt message and praised the glory of God to the students, teachers and parents. The students were also on hand to share on the meaning of the mural - caring, curiosity, confidence in self, and Christ-centered characters, which are the 4Cs that YCA values on its ongoing mission of igniting bright futures of abundance and fulfilment. The mural is also an immediate attraction for visitors, who are drawn to take pictures there.
As city dwellers who often work overtime and frequently perform repetitive motions, we are more susceptible to joint pain or sports injuries that can affect our quality of life. The Association’s Health Care Professions Department is launching a regular monthly column and publishing short articles about self-care. Topics covered will include arthritis, joint pain and self-healing. For more detailed health-related information, please visit our website www.ymca.org.hk/hcp or call 2783 3616 for inquiries.
Self-treatment for Chronic Ankle Sprain
Ankle sprain injuries happen in both sports arenas and streets, its frequency is similar to other types of pain. Inproper treatment in ankle sprain may lead to compensation in other body segment.
One of the common problems is reduction in ankle mobility, which leads to compensation in knee and lower back during squat. This compensation could lead to chronic lower back or knee pain. In addition, single leg balance would deteriorate due to poor ankle mobility, which increase the risk of re-injury.
Ankle mobility exercises
Extra tips: Move to the 5th toe or foot arch direction can improve multidirectional ankle mobility.
