Basketball and volleyball, two of the most popular sports in the world, were both invented at the end of the 19th century, by Dr James Naismith and William G. Morgan from YMCA of the USA respectively. Both games became established on the global stage comparatively quickly, and both were eventually included in the pinnacle of the sporting world: the Olympic Games.
Since our establishment in 1901, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong has never stopped promoting sports and recreation initiatives. A member of the World Alliance of YMCAs, the Association is the founding member of the Amateur Sports Federation and the Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, established in 1950. Keeping pace with the times, in recent years the Association has introduced a number of exciting emerging sports like Taspony and Walking Football to promote the wellbeing of body, mind and spirit for all.
Introduction
Employees are an enormously important resource for enterprises, organizations and institutions – with their physical and mental well-being directly tied to both their performance and the success of the organization’s overall mission. With exercise being a fast and effective way to improve the health of each and every employee, the Association is pleased to introduce our “Sport-Friendly Action” campaign which aims to create healthy workplaces across Hong Kong. Our objective is to encourage enterprises, organizations and institutions of all shapes and sizes to offer on-site exercise facilities in the workplace, allowing these entities to fulfil their corporate responsibilities, build a positive image and create a win-win situation for the organization and its employees.
Objectives
Encourage enterprises, organizations and institutions to implement sport-friendly policies and measures in order to:
Motivate employees to exercise more;
Help employees develop regular exercise habits to improve their health, reduce their risk of illness and boost their work efficiency;
Highlight how these entities care for their employees to promote a positive corporate image;
Promote the wellbeing of body, mind and spirit in a workplace
Application Requirements
All enterprises, organizations and institutions participating in the Sport-Friendly Action campaign are required to meet at least three of the assessment criteria listed below. After evaluation, verification and approval by the Association, a Sport-Friendly Action decal will then be awarded. All businesses with a valid business registration, organizations with a valid group registration, as well as tertiary institutions, schools, government departments and public organizations are welcome to apply.

Notice of Participation
All participating enterprises, organizations and institutions must ensure that all information provided is true and correct.
All participating enterprises, organizations and institutions will be required to submit additional information for verification upon request.
All participating enterprises, organizations and institutions shall provide any assistance necessary to the Association during the review process.
Information provided by all participating enterprises, organizations and institutions will be used for communication and promotional purposes.
If a participating enterprise, organization or institution is awarded a Sport-Friendly Action decal, they must actively participate in any relevant promotional activities and share their sport-friendly policies and measures with the public.
All enterprises, organizations and institutions that have been awarded the decal may display the decal for one full calendar year from the decal’s reception date.
The display of the Sport-Friendly Action decal in any advertisements or promotional materials does not mean that the Association has given or will give its approval or accreditation to any products or services provided by the participating enterprises, organizations and institution. All advertisements and promotional materials must be legal, appropriate and authentic and should not include content that is defamatory, discriminatory or offensive.
All enterprises, organizations and institutions that receive the decal must submit any promotional materials that use the Sport-Friendly Action decal to the Association by email for review and retention in our archives. The review period is no less than seven days. The participating enterprises, organizations and institutions may also be required to perform alterations or modifications to the submitted promotional materials, which may involve a longer time period. No advertisement shall be published without the prior approval of the Association.
All participating enterprises, organizations and institutions must include the words “Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Sport-Friendly Action” in any promotional materials on which the decal is used or displayed.
The Association reserves the right, at its sole discretion, at any time, to modify the design of the decal or terminate its use altogether.

The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd, as a decorated corporate supporter of Sport-Friendly Action, which holds a belief of a healthy corporation relies on the well-being of its employees. It promotes Work-Life Balance through nine interest clubs, namely, singing, badminton, table tennis, running, football, chess, photography, basketball and dragon boating. In addition to regular gatherings and training sessions, our staff teams participate in major competitions, such as the Hong Kong Marathon and the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Championships. KMB regularly organises various activities for staff members, their families and retired staff members, to promote the importance of physical and mental health, including talks on the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders, consultations on nutrition and Chinese medicine, and its in-house Slimming Award Programme, which has aroused interest in the community.

This is one of the awarded corporates, which organized various sports competitions, staff health checks and talks. It also disseminated healthy information regularly in order to enhance employees’ wellness continuously. In the meanwhile, Hang Yick subsidized its employees to participate in Trailwalker, Joyful Charity Run, Lifewire Run, Run for Girls, Hong Kong Water Race 2019 and Run Brave Charitable Competition. The Wave is one of the awarded corporate which implements sport friendly policy of flexible working hours. Also, employees are encouraged to participate sports by providing shower equipment and sports venues. Furthermore, The Wave encourages employees to participate in The Community Chest Walk for Millions and Fair Trade Cup Football Championship, and organizes wellness courses such as Ba Duan Jin, stretching workshop, TRX and Trailwalker training, so that employees could have more choices to develop various sporty hobbies.

Urban Group is one of the awarded corporate, their employees are keen on sport due to corporate’s support. It owns staff football team, basketball team and badminton team, team members practise regularly and also participate external competitions. Emerging activities of fly yoga, kickboxing and fencing are organized for staff in order to enhance their joy of exercise. This corporate not only pay attention to local sport news, employees’ health status is also highly concerned. It organized various activities to motivate employees do more exercise, such as sport day, hiking, badminton and so on. Also, a basketball machine is installed in workplace for their staff to enjoy indoor exercise. In 2019, “School Uniform Run” is organized by Sportsroad, it attracted many runners, it showed that this corporate is fully support for sport activities.

This company not only actively encourages its employees to engage in regular exercise, it also hosts an array of lunchtime workshops for employees. At these workshops, professionals share their knowledge and experience with staff members on various topics, including traditional Chinese medicine and stress management, keeping them up to date with the latest health news while enjoying a free lunch. Hung Fook Tong
This enterprise attaches great importance to the mental, physical and spiritual well-being of its staff in the workplace. A wide range of health-related talks organized by the company ensures that employees are given the latest health news. To encourage employees to actively participate in various sports activities, Hung Fook Tong also offers cash prizes and subsidies to encourage employees to take part in various sports activities and events like the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, Oxfam Trailwalker, Challenging 12 Hours, and various dragon boat races, amongst others.
