Cover Story

The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong at Bridges Street is declared as monument

The Government gazetted a notice announcing that the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong (YMCA) in Sheung Wan as a monument under the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance on 20 October.

The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong at Bridges Street, Sheung Wan, currently known as the Bridges Street Centre, was built in 1918 through the generous support of prominent members and community business leaders. It was the first headquarters building of the YMCA until the association moved its headquarters to Waterloo Road, Yau Ma Tei in 1966.

The building is six stories high and is constructed by red bricks and concrete, with a symmetrical facade design. The building integrated Chinese and Western design elements. It was equipped with the first indoor swimming pool with provision of cool and warm water and the first elevated wok-shaped timber running track supported by a cantilever structure in Hong Kong that were considered innovative and advanced at the time. It also houses a gymnasium and an auditorium with a screening room.

Since its opening, except during the Japanese Occupation period (1941-1945), YMCA has been providing various social services, witnessing the development of social services in Hong Kong. It began by offering recreational and cultural facilities to the public and served as temporary first aid stations and industrial exhibition venues when needed. Today, our focus lies in providing rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities within the premises of this building. This includes sheltered workshops and residential services. For our service users, the Bridges Street Centre is more than just a place they visit - it is a home.

The designation of the Bridges Street Centre as a monument not only recognises its rich history but also acknowledges its role as one of the few historic buildings that continue to provide essential social services in Hong Kong. It stands as a testament to the development of social services in the city.

Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Youth Comparative Research Exchange Conference on "Survey on the Impact of Family on Adolescent Self-Efficacy"

In collaboration with YMCA Macau, Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Research Institute and Taiwan's Teacher Chang Foundation, YMCA jointly organised the Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Youth Comparative Research Exchange Conference on "Survey on the Impact of Family on Adolescent Self-Efficacy", under which a total of 1,745 young people aged between 12 and 16 in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were interviewed through questionnaires in the summer of this year, of which 808 were from Hong Kong.

Three types of parental family leadership styles were identified through a self-assessment questionnaire, some of which were found to lead to higher self-efficacy among the teenagers:

"Democratic": Children are involved in family decision-making and are encouraged to share ideas with each other. Families with a higher degree of "democratic" leadership styles also score higher in self-efficacy among their children, and more families in Hong Kong tend to favour democratic leadership styles.

"Affiliative": Children's strengths and weaknesses are recognised and guidance is given to them. Families with a higher degree of "affinity" also tend to have higher self-efficacy among their children.

"Visionary: Families have a clear, long-term vision and are able to inspire and motivate others. However, the data did not show a significant relationship between the "Visionary" leadership style and children's self-efficacy.

In addition, young people with higher self-efficacy were more effective in achieving their goals and felt happier in life when facing challenges and difficulties. The survey also revealed that young people had a higher sense of self-identity when growing up in a family with a high level of intimacy and where parents invited them to join in the family decision-making process at times.

We suggest that parents can adopt the three leadership styles as appropriate, encouraging family members to participate in decision-making while respecting everyone's views and giving children appropriate autonomy to discuss solutions together.

PAIN Kick Zone

As city dwellers who often work overtime and frequently perform repetitive motions, we are more susceptible to joint pain or sports injuries that can affect our quality of life. The Association’s Health Care Professions Department is launching a regular monthly column and publishing short articles about self-care. Topics covered will include arthritis, joint pain and self-healing. For more detailed health-related information, please visit our websitewww.ymca.org.hk/hcp or call2783 3616 for inquiries.

Hallux valgus

Hallux valgus is commonly known as a bunion. It is a prevalent foot deformity where the big toe's joint deviates, causing it to angle towards the other toes. This condition often results in discomfort, pain, and difficulties in walking. This time, we would like to introduce an exercise that can help strengthen foot muscles and improve flexibility, aiming to address the issue of hallux valgus.

The Toe Spread Exercise:

  1. Sitting on a chair with feet flat on the ground and knees bent at 90 degrees. Gently apply pressure to separate your toes.
  2. Holding the position for 2-3 seconds to feel a stretch between toes. Slowly release and repeat this movement 10-15 times for 3 sets.
  3. Not to apply excessive force during this exercise to avoid discomfort.

Hallux valgus corrector:

You can use a Hallux valgus corrector to improve hallux deformity problems. It is recommended to consult with your professional physical therapist or doctor before use.
