Knitting for love with Hang Seng volunteers

Hang Seng Bank, one of our Y-Care Corporate Partners, dispatched a team of corporate volunteers to teach ethnic minority families and children from low-income families the knitting skills for six months. Recently, the same volunteer team visited elderly people living alone and families in need – taking them items that were hand-knitted by the families visited previously. This visit underlined the importance of a caring community, positivity, teaching children about civic responsibility and the vital principle of “it is more blessed to give than to receive”.

Christmas joy and fun with Nexify

Our Y-Care corporate partner Nexify sent a volunteer team to our Shek Kip Mei centre to give gifts and play games with primary students in the neighbourhood. The team also learned balloon art techniques from a YM Balloon instructor and spent a joyful afternoon having Christmas fun with the participants.

Learn Cheung Chau through Ping On Bun

To educate new arrivals about Hong Kong and bring seniors back to “the good old days”, Hang Seng Bank, one of our Y-Care CSR partners, sent a team of corporate volunteers to visit Cheung Chau with a group of seniors, new arrivals and low-income families to experience the unique culture of this beautiful island. The participants tried authentic Hong Kong food and worked together to make Ping On buns – the famous icon of the Cheung Chau bun scrambling contest. Through this hands-on activity, they learned about the history of the contest and explored the peaceful island together.

STEM workshop @ the Chinese YMCA Primary School

Our Y-Care corporate partner, Citrix Systems Hong Kong Limited, recently dispatched a team of corporate volunteers to visit the Chinese YMCA Primary School. Once there, they used their expertise to help promote STEM education by creating robots with the students. This taught them about basic coding, helping to stimulate their interest in innovative technology in an engaging and interesting way. The students and volunteers then divided themselves into groups, competing against each other in a fun robot game. Everyone enjoyed the learning and the competition, with both the volunteers and the teachers saying that they would love to have more opportunities to educate the next generation through interactive games like these.

Dah Sing Bank, our Y-Care corporate partners, sent a team of corporate volunteers to visit our Chai Wan Centre. The volunteers played with the children, working as a team to create a dream playground out of luminous blocks. Everyone worked together to create an imaginative, dream-like and fun work of art. The children not only unleashed their creativity, they also learned basic concepts in circuit bonding. The atmosphere was lively, and everyone enjoyed a fulfilling afternoon together.

Just before the Mid-Autumn festival, our Y-Care corporate partner HACHIBAN dispatched a team of corporate volunteers to visit senior couples and elderly people living alone in Chai Wan district, bringing with them gifts of healthy mooncakes and other presents. During the visits, the seniors shared their stories of mid-Autumn festival customs and festive foods with the volunteers, passing down traditional stories and wisdom.

Creative balloon twisting

Whether you are an adult or a child, colourful balloons are always a source of happiness. After learning balloon-twisting skills from the professional balloon arts instructors at YM Balloon; our Y-Care Corporate Partner Shenwan Hongyuan sent a corporate volunteer team to visit the residents of the Association’s Home of Love - Yung Shing Hostel. The volunteers taught the residents to twist balloons and played games with them, spending a happy and joyful afternoon together.

Having fun at a dough figurine-making workshop

Dough figurine making requires a high degree of precision, patience and hand-eye coordination, which is what makes it the perfect occupational therapy exercise for intellectually disabled people. Glorious Sun, one of our Y-Care Corporate Partners, recently sent several corporate volunteers to work with a group of intellectually disabled people at a dough figurine-making workshop. After working hard, the participants were thrilled to see the final results. Helping mentor them through this task was not easy, but through continuous encouragement and patience, the volunteers helped the participants overcome their challenges. Overall, it was a wonderfully rewarding experience for both the participants and the volunteers.

Love With no Boundaries: Watching fireflies

It is hard to see the true beauty of fireflies in a concrete jungle. To allow the next generation to connect with nature and help them start to take responsibility for protecting the environment, we joined hands with Hang Seng Bank, our Y-Care CSR Gold partner, in an outreach programme. The corporate volunteers first visited low-income families, newly-arrived families and ethnic minority children in the Shek Kip Mei area. They then brought them to Taipo Kau to watch fireflies. Everyone was amazed at seeing the beauty of fireflies for the very first time, especially the children. The participants then learned about the importance of taking care of plants, animals and the Earth, and understood how, by looking after the environment, we could improve living conditions for us all.

Organic Green Experience Day

Thirty-five children from ethnic minority families, low-income families, and newly-arrived families took part and enjoyed organic meals and relaxed in a beautiful natural environment. Both volunteers and children came to understand the importance of living a green lifestyle and made a commitment to protect the environment during their visit.

Give Love and Care to Children with SEN

QBE Foundation, one of our Y-Care CSR partners, supported our “Care for Children in the Community” programme. A group of 60 people – SEN students, parents and volunteers – were invited to create a large wall painting at our YMCA’s Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village. Participants first drew a sketch on a 5m by 6m wall, then filled up the entire drawing with different colours by painting with their fingers. The resulting painting is not just an artistic representation of parent-child relationships; in the future it will be used as a teaching tool to educate the public about SEN students, and to promote acceptance, and create more opportunities and a friendly environment for these children who deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Walking Football Kick-off Ceremony

Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong recently joined hands with AXA Hong Kong to launch the Walking Football 2018-2020 project, a two-year programme which will see the creation of Hong Kong’s first Walking Football League, aimed at people aged 50 or above. The kick-off ceremony was held at Plaza Hollywood in early April with a number of special guests in attendance, including Mr Dwight Yorke, a former striker for Manchester United; famous local singer Mr Hubert Wu; Hong Kong Movie Star Sports Association Football Team player Dr Law Ka Ying, MH; former Hong Kong footballer Mr Poon Man Tik; and Mr Chung Chi Kwong, a well-known football commentator. These special guests demonstrated their walking football skills, led practice exercises and shared their thoughts on this emerging sport with the 200 audience members in a lively, fun and engaging ceremony. We hope that this successful launch will allow us to promote the new sport of walking football and its many benefits to everyone in Hong Kong.

To encourage parents to motivate their children, Giormani, our Y-Care CSR partner has been supporting “Play and Learning Through Games” programme. The Company previously sent its volunteer team to participate in a series of activities, included adventure day camp, rock-climbing training and ballooning twisting workshop, to help explore the talents and interests of children; these activities can also foster children's morality and discipline, as well as the physical and mental development.

Youth Volunteer Training

Y-Care Corporate Partner Hong Kong Hachiban Limited has been supporting the ‘Sunny Teen Volunteer Leadership Training Scheme’ in youth volunteer training since July 2017. Young volunteers of the programme have participated in training camps and workshops to master the skills of practical services. After 5 months of training, the young graduated volunteers and the Hachiban volunteer team served at Home of Love - Yung Shing Sheltered Workshop, Chinese YMCA Kindergarten and elderly centres respectively, offering their strengths to those in need.
It is expected that more young people will join the volunteer scheme in the future to benefit more disadvantaged people.

In 2015, Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong launched the Y-Care CSR scheme, a social project designed to promote corporate social responsibility and augment resources for disadvantaged groups in society. This year marks the fourth year of this successful project. To help raise awareness and broaden participation in the scheme, last year we held our first annual Y-Care CSR Scheme Awards Ceremony; building on that success, we recently held the second such ceremony.
Themed “Innovative Social Services”, guest speakers at the ceremony were invited to share their strategies for applying technology to social welfare services to improve the living standards of service users. After four years of collaborative effort, the achievements of our CSR partners have begun to scale up and take off; this year, 21 Y-Care CSR partners were honoured with Gold, Silver and Bronze Partner awards, as well as the New Partner of the Year award and the Mobilisation award.
