“Greenovation” Programme

To enhance understanding of livable cities and sustainable development among the younger generation, YMCA is pleased to join hands with Arup to launch the “Greenovation” – Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village Sustainability Programme from October 2023 to March 2024. Six groups of secondary school and university students participated in the programme and received training and mentoring from corporate volunteers in areas such as design thinking, sustainability, green technology and urban planning. The university students acted as peer mentors and helped enhance secondary school students’ understanding and application of the knowledge. With the themes of “Designing a Livable City” and “Low Carbon Community/Carbon Neutrality”, the students applied design thinking skills to propose sustainable redevelopment plans for Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village, which in turn cultivated their creativity and problemsolving skills.
Presented with the “Best Performance Award” and the “Most Sustainable Development Award”, the Sacred Heart Canossian College’s design centred on the idea of “equality of mankind and all species” and incorporated the use of greenhouses and butterfly gardens for sustainable development in the village. They also proposed the use of recycled wood and green energy – integrating environmental, social, and economic sustainability in a way that was described by the judges as a potential eco-friendly green education centre. The award- winning students expressed excitement to learn about carbon reduction design from corporate volunteers as they had little exposure to the subject, and were glad to have applied their knowledge in the competition. They also hoped to see their designs incorporated into the Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village in the future.
