It’s Mini-Movie Time Again: The Competition is Officially Open!

Every year, the annual Hong Kong Secondary School Mini-Movie Competition, co-presented by Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong (the Association), Magna Education Centre and the Hong Kong Micro Movie Institute, receives overwhelmingly positive responses and strong support from schools across the city. The theme of this year’s competition, its ninth edition, is “Youths get a SAY”. This will hopefully inspire budding teenage filmmakers to make mini-movies about developing social responsibility and competencies by proactively participating in a variety of social activities and expressing their opinions on social and youth policies.

Mr Jack Ng, director of A Guilty Conscience (top) and Mr Kelvin Chan, director of Hand Rolled Cigarette (bottom) will be the judges of this year; Kelvin will also take the roles as the ambassador and workshop instructor of the competition.

This year, we have invited a group of famous local filmmakers to judge the competition, including Mr Jack Ng Wai-lun, director of A Guilty Conscience, and Mr Kelvin Chan Kin-long, director of Hand Rolled Cigarette. There will be free workshops that discuss filming tips and techniques that will be led by our competition ambassador, Mr Kelvin Chan.

The top three entries in each of the competition’s categories will be nominated to participate in overseas film festivals. The winning teams will also be granted an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to produce a micro-film with our ambassador. The Hong Kong Secondary School Mini-Movie Competition 2023 is accepting applications from now until 31 May. Don’t miss this chance to express your creativity and take part in this unique and exciting competition!

What’s New
Arts and the Community

In partnership with Arup, one of our Y-Care corporate partners, the Association recently organised an “Arts and the Community” event to increase awareness of Hong Kong’s historic properties and old shops and promote the conservation of our heritage. Led by volunteers from Arup, the event included a series of activities with three main highlights: “Old District Guided Walking Tour”, “City Scratch and Sketch” and “Craft-making”, all of which helped teenagers from across Hong Kong identify and understand their collective responsibility towards the city’s cultural heritage.

Arup’s volunteers came from all parts of the company: civil engineers, architects, urban planners, designers, and other areas. They all worked together to research and curate the guided tour itinerary, prepare and give presentations about the chosen historic spots, and plan interactive activities. The volunteers familiarised the participating teenagers with the old district of Yau Ma Tei through a fun urban exploration. Sites included the Red Brick Building, Sze Cheung, the Old Yau Ma Tei Police Station, the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market, and the Ming Sang Steel Bamboo Receptacle. The participants captured these fascinating and historically complex sites with their own eyes by making sketches of them.

After the tour, the participants took part in craft-making workshops,  bamboo steamer painting and making metal hexagonal pen holders to demonstrate that they value and appreciate these traditional artefacts that span both culture and time. Taking what they learned on the tour, they used their observations, knowledge and experience to create unique works that embody their souls and memories.

Receiving the “Sectorial Cherish Water Award” and the “Cherish Water Achievement Award”, The Cityview performed exceptionally well in both reducing and conserving water, ranking in top 10% in terms of water efficiency in 2022. The Harbourview also received an award for participating in the Water Efficient Device Installation Commendation Scheme, which recognises the fact that the hostel has installed water-efficient devices in over 90% of the building.

PAIN Kick Zone

As city dwellers who often work overtime and frequently perform repetitive motions, we are more susceptible to joint pain or sports injuries that can affect our quality of life. The Association’s Health Care Professions Department is launching a regular monthly column and publishing short articles about self-care. Topics covered will include arthritis, joint pain and self-healing. For more detailed health-related information, please visit our website www.ymca.org.hk/hcp or call 2783 3616 for inquiries.

Ribs Mobility Exercise

Shoulder is a complicated structure. A simple movement like raising your arm actually involves movements of humerus, scapula and rib cage. So, to have healthy shoulders, a good mobility of rib cage is vital. Today, we will share a Pilates exercise for improving your ribs mobility.

Book Opening exercise

  1. Lay on your side on a Yoga mat. Put your hands in front. Put your knees together and slightly bend the hips and knees.
  2. You can lay your head on a pillow or towel.
  3. Open your chest. Bring your upper arm up facing the ceiling and then turn backwards. Allow your upper body and head to turn as you move your arm. Hold your knees and pelvis steady during the upper body turning.
  4. The exercise mainly moves your rib cage, so we put more focus on the ribs rather than shoulder during the movement.
  5. When you turn the upper body to the end, maintain the position there and do 1-2 deep breathing, drawing air in to expand the whole rib cage.
  6. Then as guided by upper arm movement, turn your upper body and neck back to the starting position.
  7. Breathe calmly during the exercise.
