Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong

As part of Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong’s 120th anniversary celebrations, the Association and Tsuen Lee Group (Holdings) Ltd. teamed up to organise the Youth Tech-Innovative Product Scheme, or “YTips”. The scheme aims to promote and support secondary school students, tertiary students and prospective entrepreneurs aged 15 to 35 in the fields of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. After several training sessions, a preliminary audition, assessments and a final competition, the winners in categories have at last been chosen. In late July, an awards ceremony was held to announce the winners and give formal recognition to their achievements.

YTips received an enthusiastic response from the public this year, gaining more than 70 entries, 16 of which were selected by four judges to enter the final, held on 3 July. Four workshops were also held for the participants during the scheme, which saw a group of experts invited to share tips on product promotion, cost control and production techniques with the finalists; business matching consultations are being also provided. The awards ceremony was held on 23 July at the Cityview, where the Champion, First Runner-up and Second Runner-up awards were given out in Secondary School and Tertiary categories, along with the Best Technology Application award and Best Design award.

Present at the ceremony were Mr Edmond Cheung Kwong Ming, Founder and Managing Director of Tsuen Lee Group (Holdings) Ltd.; Mr Yau Chung Wan, President of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong; Dr Arnold Cheng Cheuk Sang, Vice President of the Association and Chairman of the Celebration Committee; and the General Secretary of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, Mr Karl Lau Chun Chuen. These honoured guests helped present awards to the winners in the three categories and the Best Technology Application and Best Design awards.

The winners in every category were given attractive prizes – Champion received HKD8,000, First Runner-up received HKD6,000, Second Runner-up HKD4,000, and the special award winners received HKD5,000 each. All finalists are also invited to join the scheme’s pre-sale initiative; once and if pre-sales reach the minimum production threshold, their product will then be launched – how exciting!

Ms Emily Cheung, Executive Director of Tsuen Lee Group (Holdings) Ltd., one of the judges at the final, expressed her appreciation for the participants’ positivity, saying. “We’ve met a lot of creative individuals at this event, and we can clearly see that young people care about what's around them – this is very much evident in their inspiration.”

Mr Alan Cheung, President of Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council, said at the ceremony, “Many young people can tackle the issues they face through creative designs and high-tech products. We look forward to the official launch of these products in the near future which will hopefully help create a better community.”

Leung Yu Ting, Ho Tze Hin, Lo Chak Kai and Chan Hiu Ching, students at S.K.H. All Saints' Middle School, won both the Champion award in the Secondary School category and the Best Technology Application award. Their project was called the “AIOT Intelligent Walking Stick”, and they shared their joy at winning, saying, “Thank you so much for hosting this event, allowing us to display the knowledge we learned at school and in the workshops. We incorporated that knowledge into our design, and we hope that this product will help more people in need!” Other winners were also happy to share their feelings about the awards. The project, designed as part of our 120th anniversary celebrations, brings together the Cyberport, the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council, the Hong Kong Innovation and Creative Industries Council, InnoSphere Product Innovation and Strategy, and several universities and related organisations – all of whom are working together to help the youth of Hong Kong realise their entrepreneurial dreams.

The NPHK 2021 “Plastic Free Cycling Tour” will be held this November!

The theme for the Association’s No Plastic Hong Kong 2021 event is “No Plastic Outing”. This year’s event will promote an important green principle – “leave no trace”. In tandem with the YMCA’s 120th anniversary celebrations, our Environmental Working Group is organising a Plastic Free Cycling Tour Challenge on 17 November, using the world’s most green form of transportation and journeying on cycle tracks around Hong Kong. We will be looking to recruit participants in groups of 3 or 4 in different categories to take the challenge. Further details below!

 

Leisure Group: Round trip cycle ride from Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village to Yuen Chau Tsai and back. The group will travel around 20km in 120 minutes.

Challenge Group: Round trip from Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village to Sheung Shui, around 40km total. The whole group will ride at least 120km (3 persons x 40km) as a target distance.

 

Enrolment starts on 16 August, and the registration fee is HK$120 per group. Each participant will also get a free T-shirt and towel. Space is limited, so please register early. For enquiries, please contact Mr Chow Kwok Fai at our Shek Kip Mei Centre on 2778 2727.

 

Chinese YMCA Primary School are champions at the Eco Home Model Design Competition!

Earlier this year, Wong Tze Hin, a P5 student at Chinese YMCA Primary School, teamed up with his teacher, Miss Sit Ka Ling. Together, they took part in the Eco Home Model Design Competition organised by the STEM Education Centre, and were ultimately crowned champions in the Primary category, coming first out of a field of 80 entries from 32 primary schools!

 

The submission requirements set by the organiser were strict and precise – in addition to STEM and aesthetic elements, 3D printing and a video presentation were also required. The judges were impressed by the work of Wong Tze Hin and Miss Sit, and their video presentation was universally acclaimed by the judges. Well done team!

 

 

Activities Highlights

Realise Love, Realise Dreams Charity Basketball Tournament

In late July, the Association and YIC jointly organised the Realise Love, Realise Dreams Charity Basketball Tournament to raise funds for our Realise Love, Realise Dreams Foundation. The aim, of course, was to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds realise their dreams – as well as deepening the mutual exchange between the two associations.

 

Three games were held on 30 July at the Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai. The Association and the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong teamed up to form a Youth Committee team which competed against the YIC team. The tournament was quite intense, with several star players contributing, including Mr Lee Pui Leung and Mr Alan Cheung, the Honorary President and President of Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council, as well as Dr Chan Pak Li, JP, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development. The YIP team won the title, but what is most important in a charity tournament is not so much the scores, but the effort everyone puts into fundraising – and in this case, both teams were definitely the winners!

 

Customs YES! 

Last month, 42 members of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong’s Kornhill Centre and Chai Wan Centre participated in the “Customs YES” programme introduced by the government’s Customs and Excise Department (C&ED). The programme aims to encourage the youth of Hong Kong to fully develop their potential, enhance their communications with the C&ED, raise their awareness about the ordinances enforced by the C&ED, and foster positive values and sense of belonging in society.
