YMCA 2026 April Perspective
"Elderly Information Literacy Sync Day 2026 - The Fraud Game" Raises Anti-Scam Awareness Among Older Adults
With online scams becoming ever more sophisticated, enhancing information literacy and anti-scam awareness has become increasingly important. In response, our InnoTech Movement working group teamed up with the police at the end of March to hold the “Elderly Information Literacy Sync Day 2026 – The Fraud Game”. The event was all about bringing different generations together to foster communication and build a safer digital community for everyone.

A key highlight was the series of “detective anti-fraud experiences” designed by our creative and tech-savvy young volunteers. They created immersive scenarios to help older adults recognise common online and real-life scams, teaching them how to be more vigilant and make the right call. A special thank you goes to the Police Community Relations Office of Yau Tsim District for providing the young volunteers with professional training on fraud and crime prevention. We are also grateful to The Regional Crime Prevention Office of New Territories South Region for sending officers to share their expertise, which further boosted everyone’s awareness.
We were also honoured to have Dr. Jim Hui, our Acting Deputy General Secretary, and The Regional Crime Prevention Office of Sha Tin Police District join in the fun, taking part in the games and chatting with the young volunteers. The event not only equipped participants with anti-fraud skills but also reinforced a sense of civic duty and community care.

Shatin Youth Outreaching Social Work Team Runs "Shine by Side Programme"

Thanks to a generous donation from the Y’s Men’s Club of Hong Kong, our Shatin Youth Outreaching Social Work Team ran the “Shine by Side Programme” from November 2025 to March 2026. The programme recruited 10 young people from our outreach services to form a volunteer group. Through a series of training sessions and practical service, the youth helped build their self-esteem while gaining a deeper understanding of and compassion for children with illnesses and the needs of their families. During the project, the volunteers put their new skills into practice by planning a fun day themselves.
The volunteer service day took place on 15 March 2026. The young volunteers, joined by 13 members of the Y’s Men’s Club of Hong Kong, visited the Ronald McDonald House in Kwun Tong to host a party for 18 families of children with illnesses, bringing smiles to a total of 49 people. The day was packed with fun, including interactive games, a magic show, and singing performances, and a photo booth was set up for families to capture precious memories. By interacting with the children and their families, the young volunteers learned to care for others with empathy, helping them develop a positive attitude to interpersonal relationships and a sense of social responsibility.
Since 2019, the Association has been actively involved in and implemented Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles, formulated its corporate development policy in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, and promoted sustainable development in Hong Kong in accordance with the “YMCA2030 Vision”. In addition to launching ESG impact reports, the Association is also committed to integrating ESG concepts into its daily operations, and this column aims to regularly share the Association’s trends in the ESG field with members.
Pushing for Sustainability on Two Wheels: Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and YMCA of Chengdu Host "Cycling for Love 2026"

We teamed up again with the YMCA of Chengdu to hold the “Cycling for Love 2026” event in Chengdu from 6 to 11 April. To celebrate our 125th anniversary, the event’s slogan was “1 Chengdu · 2 Wheels · 5 Days of Cycling”, symbolising a five-day journey through the city on two wheels, carrying on the YMCA’s spirit of showing care and service through sport. The event also ties into two key pillars of our “YMCA Vision 2030” in promoting Community Wellbeing and championing Sustainable Planet.
The event had 65 participants who cycled for about 100km along routes including The Tianfu Greenway around Chengdu, Wenjiang Beilin Greenway, and the Dujiangyan area. Along the way, they visited sights like the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Dujiangyan China Giant Panda Garden , giving them a deeper insight into the local history.
During the trip, we partnered with the Youth Service Centre at Dujiangyan for a visit to the Minjiang Road Community Day Centre for the Elderly. Our participants met and chatted with around 50 local elders and people with disabilities, and taught them how to make traditional Hong Kong-style floral plaques – a hands-on way to promote community inclusion. The event raised over HK$90,000, and we will match these donations to help fund the renovation of the YMCA of Chengdu building and support their local children’s services and community development. One participant said she really enjoyed exploring different places on her bike, with new scenery and new people to meet at every turn. She was especially pleased to complete the Tianfu Greenway route, which they couldn’t finish last year. She found the visit to the Wenchuan earthquake epicentre memorial in Yingxiu and hearing a survivor’s story particularly moving. It made her reflect on the value of life and appreciate everything she has even more.
As city dwellers who often work overtime and frequently perform repetitive motions, we are more susceptible to joint pain or sports injuries that can affect our quality of life. The Association’s Health Care Professions Department is launching a regular monthly column and publishing short articles about self-care. Topics covered will include arthritis, joint pain and self-healing. For more detailed health-related information, please visit our website: hcp.ymca.org.hk or call 2783 3616for inquiries.
Can you get Tennis Elbow even if you don't play sports?! How to prevent it?
Tennis elbow is not just for athletes. This pain is common in people who use their wrists repeatedly over a long period, such as those who use keyboards, scroll on smartphones, or wring out cloths.
Overusing the forearm muscles will cause the tendons on the outer side of the elbow to become inflamed, leading to tennis elbow.
Prevention Method 1: Forearm Muscle Stretch
- Straighten your arm, turn your palm downward, make a fist.
- Use your other hand to hold the back of your hand and press it downward until you feel a slight stretching sensation on the outer side of your elbow.
- Hold for 15–30 seconds, repeat 4 times.
Method 2: Wrist Extensor Tendon Massage
- Bend your elbow slightly and find the bony bump on the outer side of your elbow.
- Slightly flex upward.
- Find a spot about two fingers’ width away from that bone, press down with your thumb and massage in circles for 1–2 minutes using a force that you can tolerate.
